Walking proof that you should never try this at home.
Well, my initial guess of an FN FAL or CETME got the kibosh from your clue. Browning BAR?

M1918 a2 BAR Korean war /late model Late 1944 thru Vietnam war----Ray
I was going to say BAR, but the previous poster nails more details than I can muster :)farmkid
Previous poster had more details than ME =)
I'd love to get one of the chopped BAR's that got used by the Air Force ParaRescue in Vietnam. a friend of my father served as a PJ in VN and after a particular recovery, he wouldn't say where but I got the gist it was Cambodia or Laos, he burned out the barrel of his M-14 with a triple mag conversion. When he got back he asked his units Armorer to make up a BAR for him. It was cut down to a 16'' barrelwith a M-60 Flash Hider, the stock had 4" chopped off and a pistol grip added. He had the fire selector modified for 650 RPM instead of I think he said 450. He had a pic of himself carrying it and it looked very nice with a triple mag setup.
I would love to have a complete BAR, period. Took me a while to find the parts I have.
